To provide a better understanding of the Turkish Cypriot civil society organisations (CSOs) to the public at large (citizens, media, youth, business, local communities, etc.), Civic Space annually organises a one-month event: the Open Door Festival.
The Open Door Festival (ODF) aims to raise awareness on CSOs, increase their visibility, promote voluntarism and foster CSOs’ relationships with media and business sector for a stronger and inclusive civil society. The festival creates an opportunity for the CSOs to bring their work closer to the local communities while promoting their actions. It enhances the trust towards CSOs and encourages voluntarism and philanthropy towards good causes.
The first Open Door Festival took place in September-October 2016. It covered the organisation of dozens of sub events such as open doors, outreach happenings, launch events, waste sorting activity, graffiti workshop, donor day event, advocacy training, interactive theatre for children, exhibitions, roundtable discussions.
The second Open Door Festival saw the organisation of 4 CSO Fairs carried out in Nicosia, Lefka/Lefke, Famagusta, Galateia/Mehmetcik. The fairs took place every Saturday in October 2017. In addition, Civic Space supported 26 activities implemented by CSOs during the festival to “open their doors” to the public. They consisted of film and documentary screenings, nature walks, village festivals, workshops, panels, info-sessions, photo exhibitions, etc.
The third ODF consisted of 2 CSO Fairs organised in Nicosia and Famagusta and 45 sub-activities (similar to the above-mentioned activities), with the support of Civic Space, in September – October 2018. The CSOs participated to the fairs with their info stands and various activities such as photography exhibition, bike ride, blood sugar control, tour with nostalgic bus, single rope technique taster session, Lefkara Lace teaching, art workshop, second-hand sales, children activities, puppet show, etc. .
